About Piper's Garden Centre
Our History
Our founder Cyril Piper was born in 1906, who at the age of 13 started working on the family smallholding, his passions didn't lie here so in 1928 Cyril went and worked for a local nursery, which was required to produce 90% of food during the second world war. Alongside his horticultural courses he went on to become head gardener where he was seconded to work on the design and planting of the Earl of Dudley’s private memorial gardens, at Himley Hall, in memory of the Earl’s second wife.
Our First Premises
Cyril had long wanted his own nursery so in late 1947 he purchased Coven House Nurseries in Coven. His son Dennis joined the business in 1953. His reputation for quality grew and he became well known as a judge at local flower shows such as Stafford, Newport, Shrewsbury and many others. Cyril was involved in the horticultural section of the NFU in Staffordshire for a number of years. The NFU won 1 st prize for a display at the Royal Show and Cyril, as Chairman, was introduced
to the Queen Mother.
Our big move
The business continued to grow and larger premises were required, so the business moved to its current site in Gailey where, together with his son Dennis, they developed a successful nursery, trading as C. Piper & Sons. Cyril died in August 1977 and the business was then taken forward by his son Dennis.
The nursery has continued to grow into a very successful business with an excellent reputation. Cyril’s grandson, Ian, now runs the Nursery, together with his wife Tracy who opened up their first retail area on the site in 1995 and over the years have since grown into a leading local retailer in the industry . Their daughters, Emma and Samantha are now set to take over the helm for the 4th generation of the business.
